First Constitution of Illinois, 1818

Manuscript copy of the first state constitution of Illinois, adopted on August 26, 1818. It remained in effect until superseded by the second state constitution on April 1, 1848.

The last three pages of the manuscript consist of an ordinance regarding federal military bounty lands in Illinois. The ordinance lists four propositions concerning school, saline, university and seminary lands thereon.
