The Illinois Department of Public Health has tested over 100 private wells in the area bounded by Harrison Avenue, 21st Street, Sawyer Road, and 8th Street. Test results show that many of these private wells are contaminated with industrial solvents indicating contaminated groundwater (water beneath the ground) in the area.
The Illinois Department of Transportation today announced that daytime lane restrictions will be encountered on the I-270 Mississippi River Bridge. The lane closures are needed to perform bridge inspections.
Illinois EPA, Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) and the Cook County Department of Public Health are encouraging owners of private wells in developed areas (where there is a potential for chemical contamination) to have their wells tested. Over the past year there have been multiple accounts of odor complaints from areas surrounding the Veolia ES Orchard Hills Landfill and the Winnebago Landfill. Given concerns for public health and the environment, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (Illinois EPA) inspected each of the landfills to determine if there was a problem with odors at the landfills in question Sulfur-like odors were detected during some of these inspections at each landfill. Since that time, the Illinois EPA has been working with the Veolia ES Orchard Hills and Winnebago Landfills to evaluate landfill operations in an effort to ensure the health and safety of the community and the protection of the environment during operation of the facilities.
The purpose of this fact sheet is to provide information to and educate citizens about landfill odors and the corrective measures that Veolia ES Orchard Hills Landfill and the Winnebago Landfill have been undertaking to alleviate the odors. In order to keep area residents informed, fact sheet updates will be distributed as landfill activities progress at each facility.
