Potential English Learners (ELs) are screened for English language proficiency (ELP) using an approved English language screening instrument. Students who do not meet the criteria of English proficiency on the ELP screener are identified as English Learners. Students maintain that status until they achieve ELP on the WIDA ACCESS for ELLs, which is the annual ELP assessment in Illinois.
