Resurfacing Project to begin on Sidney-Longview Road

The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that beginning July 9, 2012, 3 miles of Sidney-Longview Road will be resurfaced from Block Road to Bongard Road in Champaign County. The project starts approximately 4 miles south of Sidney. During construction, one lane of traffic will be maintained on Sidney-Longview Road.

Omer Osman, Deputy Director and District 9 Engineer for the Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that a Canadian National/Illinois Central Railroad crew will make repairs to the Illinois Route 149 Railroad Crossing in Desoto, IL beginning Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at 7:30 a.m. The highway at the railroad crossing will remain closed until repairs are completed on the afternoon of Wednesday, February 1, 2012.

Southeast Rockford Groundwater Contamination Superfund Project: Source Area 11 Remedial Investigation Results

Area 11 is an old industrial area dating back to at least 1906. Past industries include Rockford Varnish, Rockford Coatings Corporation and Rockwell International Graphics. Some of these industries have documented use of chlorinated solvents, the main chemicals of concern for the project area. Past surface spills appear to have been the primary sources of Area 11 surface and subsurface soil as well as groundwater contamination. Chlorinated industrial solvents found in the remainder of the Southeast Rockford Project were detected in some Area 11 samples at low concentrations. Non-chlorinated solvents, often associated with petroleum products, however, were found in such high concentrations in Area 11 that the detection limit of the analytical equipment had to be raised considerably. There may have been relatively high concentrations of chlorinated solvents in Area 11 samples, but they may not have been detected because of the high detection limit of the analytical equipment.

Southeast Rockford Groundwater Contamination Superfund Project: Catalytic Oxidation

The contaminants of concern in the Southeast Rockford Groundwater Contamination Superfund Project are mainly industrial solvents in a class of chemicals called volatile organic compounds (VOCs). "Volatile" means that they are readily converted to gas (vapor). "Organic" means they contain carbon. The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (Illinois EPA) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S.EPA) are proposing catalytic oxidation as a method of treating VOC vapors in Source Areas 7 and 11 of the Southeast Rockford Groundwater Contamination Superfund Project.
