The 1980-1981 drought in Illinois: causes, dimensions, and impacts

This report addresses the 1980-1981 drought in Illinois. This 15-month drought, which began in February 1980 and was centered in the southern portions of the state, was not one of the extreme droughts of record. However, its importance derives from the fact that it is the most severe drought since those of the early 1950s. As such, the 1980-1981 drought potentially reflects a new set (or new types) of impacts on the states water resources due to many technological, hydrological, and institutional changes since the 1950s.As noted above, droughts are a basic and important feature of the climate and water resources of Illinois. The interesting near absence of droughts in the state between 1955 and 1976 makes the drought of 1980-1981 of great interest, although it was not extremely severe.

The aim of this investigation is to inform the public about how the postglacial environment in northeastern Illinois developed based on fossil and sediment records in lake and wetland deposits at the Pratts Wayne Woods Forest Preserve near Bartlett, Illinois, and how this knowledge helps increase the understanding of climate and environmental change during the transition from the last glacial period to the current interglacial period.

Temporal distribution of midwestern precipitation during the 20th century

Temporal fluctuations in the annual and summer precipitation across the Midwest during the 1898-2002 period are defined and described. Precipitation amounts were assessed for 15-year periods to show how patterns of precipitation have shifted spatially over the 20th Century. The early part of the century featured near average precipitation conditions, followed by predomi-nately dry conditions from 1928 through 1957. For example, during 1928-1942, 96 percent of the Midwest had below average precipitation. After 15 years with near average conditions from 1958 to 1972, extremely wet conditions developed during 1973-2002, with 91 percent of the Midwest experiencing above average precipitation. Extreme precipitation values sampled during each 15-year period revealed temporal differences with much more extreme amounts during wet and dry periods than during near average periods. Annual totals reflected the long-term variations in summer rainfall, revealing the importance of summer rainfall in determining annual amounts. Regionally, amounts were below average more frequently in the southern Midwest than in the central and northern Midwest. Values were above average more frequently in the northern Mid-west than in the central and southern Midwest. The results provide information that should be useful for hydrologic and agricultural planning and assessments.

The 2005 Illinois drought.

Dry conditions in 2005 reached a historic level of severity in some parts of Illinois and ranked as one of the three most severe droughts in Illinois in 112 years of record. The timing of the dryness during the spring and summer, when water demand and use are high, ensured substantial impacts on agriculture and other sectors. The drought also had several unusual characteristics. The drought area was long and narrow, extending from south Texas to the Great Lakes, but within the Midwest, the drought had relatively minor impacts on states other than Illinois. A record number of remnants of hurricanes and tropical storms passed through Illinois during July, August, and September, substantially ameliorating drought conditions in portions of central and southern Illinois. Crop yields were surprisingly high in parts of the state, perhaps providing evidence of increased drought resistance in modern varieties and the benefits of timely rains.
