The Little Village Gang Violence Reduction Project in Chicago

This book is about the Little Village Gang Violence Reduction Project, which was based on the idea that the gang problem is defined not only by the delinquent or criminal behaviors of gangs and gang members but also by what the community institutions do or do not do to prevent and control the problem. Certain youth and the community together - including its component parts, particularly family, police, schools, youth agencies, probation, churches and neighborhood organizations and political administrations as well as larger social, economic and cultural factors - are responsible for the creation and intensification of the problem. The model proposes that a special structure of these agencies and community groups must be developed to focus and implement strategies toward target youth in gang-problem communities.

The Needs Of The Wrongfully Convicted: A Report On A Panel Discussion: A Report To The Governor's Commission On Capital Punishment

The Illinois Death Penalty Education Project and the Center on Wrongful Convictions at the Northwestern University School of Law sponsored the panel discussion. It was held on the campus of Northwestern Law School on March 13, 2002 and was open to the public. This report was prepared for Governor Ryans Commission on Capital Punishment to provide additional information on those who have been wrongfully convicted of murder and subsequently incarcerated. It is hoped that this information is useful in the Commissions consideration of possible improvements in the way criminal justice agencies and allied entitiesmeet the needs of those who have been wrongfully convicted.

Total Cost of Ownership For Metalworking Fluids

Metalworking fluids have a greater financial impact on a company than the purchase price alone. This is often called the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), and has two components hidden costs and performance leverage - in addition to the fluid purchase price. Hidden costs arise from the fact that fluids must be managed, from purchasing and receiving, to plant floor clean-up, to waste treatment and disposal. Performance leverage results from fluids effects on process performance, from machine tool life to product scrap and rework. In this study, three plants using metalworking fluids were examined for fluid TCO. The techniques used in this study provide a relatively quick and inexpensive method for companies to estimate the TCO and performance leverage for their own metalworking fluids.

Unique 2004 growing season weather conditions resulting in record high crop yields in Illinois and the Midwest.

Weather during the 2004 growing season in the Midwest, along with improved plant genetics and farming practices, produced exceptionally high yields of all major crops with resulting record yields 10 to 25 percent above prior records, an exceptional increase. Record corn and soybean yields in Illinois and five other states had profound effects on crop prices, given the large foreign demand and the decreasing dollar value, resulting in a huge income increase for Midwestern farmers, $13- $14 billion. Crop experts, regional farmers, and crop-weather models failed to detect and predict the enormous magnitude of the final yields. This inability to assess the magnitude of the 2004 crop yields likely resulted from a lack of information about the presence and effect of the frequent days with clear skies in 2004. The number of clear days, 50 percent to 105 percent above average across the entire Midwest, also were accompanied by much below average temperatures and normal rainfall. Examination of Illinois climate conditions over the past 117 years reveals that when many clear days occurred, most summers were quite hot and dry. Only one prior summer (1927) had comparable conditions to those in 2004. Summer 2004 weather conditions also were unusual in other respects, including having characteristics that were beneficial for all crops. For example, prior record high yields occurred in 2003 for corn, in 1994 for soybeans, in 2001 for sorghum, and in 1990 for alfalfa. Seldom does the entire Midwest experience near uniform summer weather conditions, reflecting another climatologically-unique aspect of summer 2004 weather. Canadian high-pressure centers, resulting from the intrusion of 20 strong cold fronts, frequently dominated the atmospheric circulation across the central United States during the summer, limiting the movement of warm, moist air into the region and creating the season's high frequency of clear days.
