This report contains a history of the decline in the use of Illinois coal in electricity generation and the factors leading to this decline. These factors include regulations limiting sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions from power plants, the economics of controlling the emissions of SO2 in coal-fired electrical generating units (EGUs), and the use in Illinois power generation of low-sulfur coal from the Western United States.
