Evaluation of the 2013 Community Violence Prevention Programs Parent Program In 2013, the Community Violence Prevention Programs Parent Program offered 1,010 parents in 21 Chicago-area communities training and then coordinated their participation in community service projects. The evaluation of the Parent Program was designed to guide programmatic enhancements and funding decisions. Researchers used multiple surveys of program staff and participants in order to obtain feedback on trainings and general program operations. The program met its goals of building protective factors to reduce child maltreatment in families; employing and training over 1,000 parents to complete service projects; and improving the community through community service.

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) is one of many state agencies that plan and coordinate primary, secondary and tertiary child abuse and neglect prevention programs and services. As such, the Department is charged to administer child abuse prevention shelters and service programs for abused and neglected children, or provide for their administration by not-for-profit corporations, community-based organizations or units of local government. DCFS is also legislatively empowered with the administration of the Illinois Child Abuse Prevention Fund that is supported through the statewide tax check-off option and a portion of the proceeds from the sale of Illinois commemorative birth certificates.
