This report, Disproportionate incarceration of African Americans for Drug offenses in the U.S., which is the first in a series, discusses national trends in arrests and incarcerations for drug offenses and describes the growth in the countrys prison population attributable mainly to increases in the number of persons sentenced to prison for drug offenses. It also demonstrates that African Americans are many more times likely than non-African Americans to be sentenced to prison for such crimes. Finally, the report discusses how racial disproportionality in drug law enforcement, prosecution, and sentencing practices has adversely affected the African American community.

Homicide is a leading cause of death for children and infants in the U.S. The focus of this issue of Research at a Glance is Childrens Risk of Homicide: Victimization from birth to age 14, 1965 to 1995, a study by ICJIA Senior Research Analyst Carolyn Rebecca Block and Kimberly Vogt, University of Wisconsin, LaCrosse. A population-based examination of the risk of homicide over the 31-year period compares the risks for young children versus older teens and adults, boys versus girls, children of different racial/ethnic groups, and children in different developmental age groups.
